For safety reasons, a modern furnace will not work if the furnace door is not completely closed. Some units have a switch that the door presses when it’s properly shut. If you notice the AC fan not working, it could also be caused by a problem with the compressor contactor. The unit's compressor switch sends electricity voltage to the fan and condenser unit. If there’s enough gas flow through the pilot, then the next step is to check the burner. It’s common for the burner holes to collect soot from previous use, especially if you’re running the heater around the clock.

The first thing you should check is that the manual gas valve is open. The gas valve handle should be parallel with the pipe that it’s attached to. The exhaust flue is the pipe that the inducer fan is connected to. When the inducer fan runs, it blows the toxic combustion gases through the exhaust flue. The exhaust flue leads to the outside of the house so the combustion gases don’t stay in your home. You may notice that the fan doesn’t run but the compressor does.
How to Reset a Furnace Fan
If that doesn’t fix the problem, schedule a service call. You may need more refrigerant, have a blockage in your drain pipe, or have a broken condensate pan. If you are satisfied that the thermostat settings are correct, check your power supply. Your AC system runs on electricity, and there are typically three locations you can check to be sure the issue isn’t with power to the system. First, locate your main breaker box panel and make sure the AC system circuit breaker hasn’t been tripped. The outdoor unit typically takes 220v power to operate and should be on its own circuit.

The condenser fan motor and fan are typically mounted at the top in the center of the unit and are usually visible through the fan guard or wire grill. If you discover a broken or damaged fan blade, keep the system turned off and contact a local HVAC professional for repair.
The evaporator coil sits inside your home within the air handler unit , pulling heat and humidity from indoor air as it passes through. The evaporator coil can freeze up as a result of indoor blower fan malfunction, low refrigerant charge, low outdoor temperatures, or other system malfunctions. Air Conditioner Won’t Stop Running
The mere presence of a belt drive in your condensing unit means the system is old, and it’s time to think about upgrading your air conditioner. Newer versions of air conditioner units do not use belts; instead, they use direct drive components to automatically connect the fan and motor. The capacitors are linked to the fans, so the fans should work when energy flows through them. Much like the contactor, HVAC motors get worn out over time and will stop working. The furnace condensate drain line is prone to clogging, just like air conditioners. The switch is a simple on/off switch that’s used to disable the gas valve during the summer. If the inducer fan is running and the exhaust flue is clear, the pressure switch will trigger closed and the furnace’s ignitor will light up. When sufficient airflow is detected through the exhaust flue, the pressure switch closes and allows the furnace to heat up. The furnace’s pressure switch is responsible for checking whether the inducer fan is working properly.
One capacitor starts the motor, and the other sends standard voltage to keep it running. Unfortunately, capacitors wear out with time and often need to be replaced before the end of the life of the air conditioning system. The capacitor’s job is to store power used to operate the fan motor in the condenser unit. Occasionally, these components fail which prevents the fan motor from receiving proper power as the system runs. Have your HVAC technician replace the capacitor and this fix should correct the outside AC fan not working. Look inside and see if any fan blades are bent, broken, or missing.
